Hi,
Has anyone ever attempted to replace the bearing of an external cup bb? I used a phil wood tool on shimano 24mm some years back.
Now I want to try this on a 30mm id race face bsa bb.
Any recommendation?

Assuming you have the correct tools, it’s easily done. I’ve done this a number of times on various external bb’s.
Is the tool I am thinking of. The ID of the cup is not much larger than 30mm, this limits access
Final update : the bearing swap did work, the tool does not engage fully though, due to space constraints. Also I had to remove a small burr with a knife, on the bb cup
